Pressure differential on a swimmer’s hands and swimming direction

چکیده
It is vital to maintaining a constant direction during locomotion. Turning in walking is triggered by the impulse from the leg located outside its rotation axis. Then, the centre of gravity is relocated in the direction of an inside limb [1]. It is commonly believed that similar correlation can be observed in swimming. Greater propulsion forces produced by the right limbs cause turning left. The upper and lower limps may generate the propulsion while swimming. However, its main source are the upper limbs [2]. Their activity seemed to determine the swimming direction. Hand surface is the main propulsion surface of the upper limb. Propulsion is determined by the pressure differential P(t) exerted by the water on the back of the hand and palm [3]. The purpose of this research is to check the correlation of asymmetry of pressure differentials exerted on the right and left hand with the swimming direction in breaststroke. During the research the propulsion will be produced only by the upper limbs. The analysis will be related to the propulsion phase.

Swimmer's itch: a cercarial dermatitis.
What are the symptoms of swimmer’s itch? Symptoms of swimmer’s itch can be felt soon after swimming. You will first feel a tingling, itching or burning sensation. Within twelve hours of swimming, red bumps appear on the skin which may turn into blisters or a larger rash. The greater number of exposures to contaminated water, the more intense and immediate symptoms of swimmer’s itch will be. The...
متن کاملThe Effect of Stroke Length on Active Drag in Swimming
The main resistive force in swimming is due to drag on a swimmer’s body from the water. There are two forms of drag, one is active drag (FD), which is the drag encountered while propelling the body through the water. The other is passive drag or the drag encountered while gliding during a push-off after a turn or after entering the water from the start. These different types of drag are both pr...
متن کاملSonification of Pressure Changes in Swimming for Analysis and Optimization
This paper introduces the sonification of pressure sensor data measured while executing crawl stroke swimming. Swimming research aims at better understanding the flow conditions in detail to adapt swimming strokes to achieve maximal speed with minimal energy consumption. The fact that a pressure field is induced during the interaction of body and water is rarely considered. Any aquatic self-ind...
متن کاملLocomotion over a Washboard
The purpose of this thesis is to study the problem when a microorganism swims very close to a shaped boundary. In this problem, we model the swimmer to be a two-dimensional, infinite periodic waving sheet. For simplicity, we only consider the case where the fluid between the swimmer and the washboard is Newtonian and incompressible. We assume that the swimmer propagates waves along its body and...
متن کاملThe Effect of Rest Periods on Energy System Contribution During Interval Swimming
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of rest periods on energy system contribution during interval swimming and whether the energy system contribution varied depending on the swimmer’s specialty, such as swimmers who specialize in the 100 m or 200 m. Seven highly-trained male varsity swimmers performed three different tests: a 10-min continuous test (CON), 10 1min interval te...
